The absence of a single standard creates new liabilities for the securities industry. The authors contend that the building measurements that underlie the market valuations of all publically traded real estate investments trusts and commerical mortgage-backed securities must be calculated and validated by the Securities and Exchange Commission as agreed to by FASB, in accordance with a single, national standard.
